We've entered a new and exciting year in our Media Centre at Northwest! One of the first things a couple of Grade R's told me is that they don't have computers at home... they have ipads!

This year we will be starting with e-books in the library and Grades 5 to 7 will have class blogs. The class blog will be a place for each class to interact with their classmates about educational matters, including book reviews, class projects and current events. I look forward to your support in this.

CAMP OUT - 5 November

The Grade 7s are hosting the annual camp out on Saturday. The fun will start at 16:00 on the dot. There will be swimming, jumping castle, netball, volleyball, an obtacle course, braaing and singing lots of carols around a roaring campfire. Come and help the Grade 7s with their fundraising towards a present for our school.

Entrance fee: R20 per child and R30 per adult.

Come buy hot chocolate and glow sticks. You can even stalk the lantern.

There are a few rules that you need to be aware of:
1. Every child must be accompanied by and supervised by a RESPONSIBLE adult!
2. No swimming or people allowed in the pool area after 18:00
3. Tents are only allowed in the designated area on the top field.
4. Tuck and hot choc will be available at the ramp.
5. No littering - bins have been provided
6. NO ALCOHOL
7. Lights out at 23:00
8. Everyone is to leave by 8:00 on Sunday morning.
9. No Pay = No Campout

Hello Grade 3R, and all the wonderful parents and teachers and friends from Northwest Christian School.
This is my first attempt to publish something on Our Wonderful Blog, so I am hoping that it works.
I just wanted to say a Big Thank you for all your prayers, gifts, phone calls and meals that came my way.
Unfortunately this operation was unexpected and so my life was thrown into turmoil. But with the support from all of you wonderful people, we have managed to pull through

To my parents of all the children in 3R, Mrs Nelson is a fantastic and wonderful teacher, and we are so grateful that she was able to step in at the last moment. Please don't worry as each and every child will be loved and cared for.

I am hoping to return asap but it depends on the Doc.

Please travel safely for those who are going away, have a Blessed time with your children and I will see you all next term.

raise funds for NWCS!

Fan Can is a brand of high quality A3-sized jigsaw puzzles that are licensed by The South African Rugby Football Union and Cricket South Africa. Each 252 piece jigsaw puzzle forms part of a collection (e.g. the Springboks Collection or the Proteas Collection) and the puzzles are packed individually in a can that resembles an oversized cold drink can. Each puzzle is numbered and forms part of its respective Collection (e.g. the Springboks Collection.)

To add to the hype surrounding the up-coming Tri-nations and the Rugby World Cup, we are offering a
collector’s pack of all four of the current Springboks puzzles for R100 per pack. The Fan Can puzzles
normally retail at R99.95 PER PUZZLE, so this price represents a fantastic discount over the normal retail price and the school will raise great funds for their school.

A big thank you to the de Charmoy family for the donation of 20 Ster Kinekor movie tickets as prizes for our Numberwise program. The tickets will go to the top 20 Numberwise users in the school for this year. We are still looking for a donation for the main prize which will go to 1 of 365 children who have done over 100 calculations in a day, selected by Numberwise. We are looking for a technology prize in the form of an ipod, laptop, digital camera, Blackberry etc. The name of the donor or donating company will appear on the Numberwise wesbsite. INTERNET LICENCES

Congratulations to all of you in Grades 4 to 7 who passed your Internet Licence last term. You are on your way to opening huge doors of learning in the exciting world of ICT. Those of you who did not get your licence last term may come and see me after school on Monday or Tuesday between 13.30 and 14.00 to take an oral test.

Your new licence entitles you to use the computers on a Monday and Tuesday afternoon between 13.30 and 14.00 and during first break on a Tuesday and Thursday. Come on in and do your project research, find out more about a subject or sport, watch YouTube videos to improve your tennis swing or skateboarding techniques, write a story using Word or Storybird.com. There is sooooo much you can do! Remember, school rules apply and the Internet is not for playing games at school.

Two IT monitors have been selected and must be respected when they are in charge in the computer room. Breaking of the rules or lack of respect for the monitors or teacher in charge will result in the loss of your licence for the year.

Grade 6s at the War Museum

What better way to enhance our children's curriculum than by doing site visits.

During the second term, the Grade 6s were reading a book called The Silver Sword by Ian Serraillier, which is about children left stranded in war-torn Warsaw and Poland during World War II. To bring this book to a bit closer to home, the Grade 6s were taken to the War Museum for a visit on 22 March .... looks like it was lots of fun.

On the last day of term 1, the kids had lots of fun putting out their coins in the shape of a rhino... all in the name of conservation. Unfortunately we don't have a photo of the final product.

Our school has registered each pupil to use Numberwise to help improve mental maths skills. The program is free and can be used at home. If you need help with downloading and installing, please speak to Mrs Tschohl.

The maths computer programme is running well, with the children taking a keen interest in competing against both themselves and each other. The hope of a prize is also very inspiring. There has already been an improvement in the children’s mental maths.

The one thing we are missing is sponsorship. This is needed at two different levels.

The Championship Prize at school level: A child enters for this prize by doing 1 or more Numeracy Olympiad drills. The winner is the student with the fastest time during the year. We are looking for a sponsor who would be prepared to donate a cell phone, ipod, laptop, software or some such item for this prize to be awarded at the end of the year.

The Grand Prize at school level is to reward the consistent use of Numberwise. A child is entered if he or she does 100 or more calculations in a day. The daily winner is chosen randomly from the pool of entries. Sponsorship at this level could be air time, stationery, etc.

If you or your company is interested in sponsoring our students in their endeavour to improve their
mental maths, please would you contact Tracy Tschohl on 084 408 0169 or the school office.

COINS FOR RHINOS

A couple of learners at the school have been very concerned about the plight of Rhinos in the country. We are going to make Friday 25th March a civvies day and all pupils are asked to bring coins to help towards this worthy cause.

The coins will be laid out in the shape of a giant Rhino marked off in the parking lot. Let's see how much we can raise.

One Way Around the School

It has been requested by parents parking on the Pre-school side to use Albert Drive as a one way. We would like to give this a try.

As of tomorrow, Friday 11 March 2011, we would ask that parents treat Albert Drive as a one way road and that you park diagonally, this will also give more room for everyone wishing to use this entrance.

We would also like to request that parents take care of their children when they get out of their cars and please respect each other and our neighbours. Please also note that this is not official so you need to be aware of other drivers who may not treat this as a one way. Remember normal traffic rules apply.
This should alleviate the traffic problems in the morning and afternoon.

Saturday Sports Event coming soon

The PTA and Saturday Sports Team have decided to end off the term with a fun-filled Saturday morning of sports. Come and join us on 19 March from 08:30 to 12:00 at NWCS. Enter your Parent/Child team and participate in the sporting events we've prepared for you.

Moms and Dads are welcome, so why don't you and your child/children enter a team. Remember you don't need to be sporty to participate, you just need to be prepared to have some fun. There will be food on sale as well as a tuck shop.

Please return the tear-off reply slip received early this week to the school office so that we can get an idea of who will be attending as well as for catering purposes.

Civvies day was a huge hit with the children last week Friday.... from the very littlies to the Grade 7s and even the teachers. Lots of fun was had by all.

Thanks too to the PTA moms who organised the sale. The children all managed to get something for their loved one(s). The variety of goods for sale was outstanding and it was a great two days of shopping.

VALENTINE - AGAPANTHUS DAY

Each year our Grade 6’s raise funds for the Grade 7 Farewell. On Thursday and Friday, 10 and 11 February will be having a sale to celebrate the traditional day of Valentine…we would love to extend this day of love to our friends, family and people we care about and focus on the Agape or Agapanthus love of caring for each other …

John 13:34 “So now I am giving you a new commandment: love one other. As I have loved you, so you must love one other.”

There will also be a civvies day on Friday 11 Feb (R5 per child) the money raised from this will be given to a less fortunate school as our gesture of love and care.

NEW PARENTS TEA

Thank you to all the new parents who attended the New Parents Tea on Saturday 29 January 2011. We had a fabulous morning with some yummy eats (thanks Megan Klee!)

The opening event for the Grade 0s is their annual picnic on Friday 28 January 2011. Luckily this year it was a lovely clear evening with no rain in sight.

The PTA has, over the last few years, aimed to encourage a real sense of community among the parents of our wonderful school. This has been achieved by, among others, the efforts of our wonderful class parents. The role of the class parent has now become invaluable to the functioning of the PTA.

The primary role of the class parent is as follows:

To be a part of the PTA and to act as liaison between the PTA and the other parents in their class. For example, arranging parents to help at fun days etc. To this end it would be helpful if class parents were able to attend as many PTA meetings as possible, although not essential.
To establish a relationship with their class teacher and be able to either themselves lend a hand, when needed, or ask other parents to help with for example making small improvements in the classroom.
To establish a relationship with the other parents in the class by sending out reminders of events, or a card on the birth of a child or the loss of a loved one.
To arrange a birthday party/gift for their class teacher

Many of the class parents of previous years have been quick to point out that the small effort it has required has been far out weighed by the rewards reaped both for themselves and for their children.

When replying please state the grade and class you would be representing.

The cut off date is 28 January and there will be a tea for all the class parents on 5 February.

PARKING OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL
Parents are reminded to use the designated parking bays when dropping and fetching children and not to block the flow of traffic by stopping in the road. Please also exercise extreme caution when reversing out. Please also take note of the Scholar Patrol lines as that is where all children should cross the road.

MESSAGES
As we do not have an intercom system, it is difficult to get late messages to the children before they go home in the afternoon. Could parents please ensure that, before leaving your child at school, they know where and who will be collecting them after school. Please also ensure that your child has a phone card. These are available from the office for R25.

HOME TIME
It is requested that parents do not wait outside their children’s classroom at home time as this disturbs the classes. Please meet your child at a pre-arranged place on the school grounds. The gates will only be opened at 12:50.

WAITING CLASS
All grade 1 – 3 learners are to go to waiting class if they are not fetched at 13:00. Waiting class runs from 13:00 to 13:30. No children will be allowed to wait at the gate during this time.

CLOTHING
Learners are requested not to share or lend out uniform items especially costumes. All children are to have their own PE clothes, costumes, swimming caps, towels and caps/hats.

Please ensure that all your child’s school clothing is marked. Lost property can be found in the two bins behind the Junior bathrooms or in the aftercare room.

NOTE: there are LOTS of items that are marked in the lost property bins.... please go check if your child's stuff is there.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION
All learners will be allowed to wear the correct PE uniform to school instead of their school uniform ONLY on the day they have PE. This is to reduce the time spent on getting dressed and to minimize the opportunity for clothing to go missing.

MONIES SENT TO SCHOOL
The office unfortunately does not keep change. All monies sent to school must be sent in a sealed envelope, clearly marked with your child’s name, class, what it is for and the amount.

MEDICATION
Parents are requested to please keep teachers and office staff informed about your child’s allergies or relevant medication that may be need. Children with severe allergies should keep medication in class or in their bags, eg epipens and asthma pumps. Alternatively your child’s medication can be kept in the office. It should be clearly marked with your child’s name and instructions on dosage. This could make a huge difference when a problem arises.

INTERHOUSE SWIMMING GALA – MONDAY 17 JANUARY

We will be holding our Inter-House Gala on Monday. Children who made the swimming trials will compete in the gala on Monday. Children in the pre-school and grade 1’s will not be participating.
The gala will start at 08:15 and end at approximately 13:30. Waiting class and aftercare will continue as normal.

Children who are swimming are to wear their swimming costumes under their P.E. clothes. House colour T-Shirts may be worn, together with takkies, a HAT/CAP and plenty of sun block. Remember to bring 2 swimming towels. A yellow NWCS or house colour swimming cap must be worn. All other learners that are not swimming must be dressed in PE clothes. A house T Shirt may be worn in place of the school PE Shirt.

Children are to bring lunch packed in a disposable bag and lots of water. No fizzy drinks or glass bottles are allowed. The tuck shop will be available.

In the event of rain, children may still wear their P.E. clothes or house colours and must bring their suitcases to school. School will still close at normal time. Waiting class and aftercare will continue as normal. The gala will then be held on Tuesday 18 January.

Parents and grandparents are most welcome to attend.

The school has 13 (only) high quality blow up mattresses for sale at a cost of R200 each and a few sleeping bags at a cost of R150. These were used for the World Cup visitors. The sleeping bags have all been washed.

The camp out was held on 6 November.... with rain threatening and the wind howling... but spirits were definitely NOT dampened.

A big thank you to Tessa Elliot, Bev Smith, Norma Voogt, Sasha Azilick, Jenny Allman, Kariena Kolisko, the Norel Quartet, Rosie, Trust and all the teachers who helped with the organization of the Camp Out. Thank you to all our parents who supported the Camp Out. It was a great success and a lot of fun was had by all.

Juniors Sports Day

On the 19th of August the Junior School (Grades 1, 2 & 3) went over to Kings School Robin Hills for a day of fun athletics... otherwise known as Mini Olympics.

The feedback was very positive ... all the children seemed to enjoy the day and loved participating in the different events.

Did you wear your sticker on Friday 3 September? Well the children of our school certainly did.

Thanks to all who dressed in civvies and bought their tickets. We have been able to send Casa da Sol School an amount of R3 500.

Helping Out

At the beginning of term our school was hit by an opportunistic shopper who helped themselves to a few computers. Unfortunately Mrs Renwick's was not insured. As a class, and also with assistance from the PTA, we raised some money to buy Mrs Renwick a new laptop.

On Monday morning 6 September, Debbie Hanekom, the class mom, handed over the new laptop to Mrs Renwick. This was all done in secret so the surprise and emotion were very evident!

Mandela Day 2010 - Report Back

I'm sure there were lots of families that tried to do something in honour of Mandela Day earlier this year....

Here is what one family did.... Mom & Dad Beyer (Frances & Aldrin) took part in a spin-a-thon at Constantia Kloof Virgin Active for a child Jed with cancer. Well done!

NWCS's Got Talent

The Talent show will take place on Thursday 9th September between 18:30 – 20:30 at Northcliff Union Church.

Children must sit with their parents if not participating in the show.

There will be hotdogs for sale at a cost of R7 each.

Tickets will be on sale before and after school outside the secretary’s office at R20 per person on Tuesdays and Thursdays

Don’t forget to keep inviting your family and friends to the Proudly South African Spring Walk.

OUR AIM IS TO HAVE A RECORD NUMBER OF WALKERS THIS YEAR WHICH IS WHY THE PTA IS OFFERING A FABULOUS PRIZE FOR THE FAMILY WHO BRINGS THE MOST WALKERS.

HARVEST AID: FEED A FRIEND BOTTLE PROJECT

NWCS will be doing a fundraiser this term to raise money for Harvest Aid. This organization supports child-led and granny-led households. Learners were each given two information leaflets with more information on this Christian Organization as well as a plastic bottle.

Learners are encouraged to fill their bottles with as many coins as they can in the next three weeks and hand it back to their teachers by Wednesday 15th September.

The Purr Factory

We had a special visit from The Purr Factory at school yesterday...

and now the kids are trying very hard to collect the cards...

All young animals must acquire certain skills to survive. For kittens, being cute is certainly the most important skill and there is only one school for kittens – Suzie Swishtail’s Academy for Kittens. There is near catastrophe when the purrs intended for their graduation are stolen from The Purr Factory, but Detective Norris Norton Nackered and his sidekick Humphrey Hound Dog saves the day.

The Purr Factory is a new family-friendly fun-filled rock musical, performed by the UJ Song and Dance Company, directed by Alby Michaels from 8 – 25 September 2010 (Wednesdays to Saturdays at various times). Marga Sander is the music director and Owen Lonzar is the choreographer.
